Tax Manager

A Tax Manager is the liaison between the Partner group, the client, and the professional staff.  Managers are responsible for managing multiple tax projects and client engagements simultaneously, and scheduling, and coordinating engagement workflow. Managers develop and train staff, as well as make associations to develop new business for the firm.

Essential Functions:

Professional Competence and Technical Development

  • Demonstrates a high level of tax technical proficiency; strong knowledge of estate and trust is useful but not necessary.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of business issues relating to complex transactions.
  • Comfortable running meetings with clients and their attorneys
  • Communicates with staff and clients to enhance understanding of business and tax issues.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of Firm software and the ability to use such software effectively.
  • Motivates subordinates to take full advantage of computer technology.
  • Demonstrates effective oral communication skills for formal presentations, and training sessions.
  • Skilled at complex client correspondence with recommendations, technical issues, proposals, etc.
  • Understands current business trends and implements successful change for client business.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of recent tax developments and their implications client business.
  • Demonstrates ability to research complex tax issues and directs the research activities of staff.

Client Service Satisfaction

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of client business beyond tax related aspects.
  • Builds and maintains strong business relationships with individual clients and financial officers.
  • Identifies issues and recommends creative solutions to complex client issues.
  • Organizes work schedule that ensures timely and priority-sensitive services to clients.
  • Effectively identifies and delivers cross-selling opportunities to our clients.

Staff Development

  • Motivates staff through professional and technical reputation and enthusiasm.
  • Effectively delegates assignments to foster an environment of mentoring and team work.
  • Develops the staff’s understanding of our business and the business world in general.
  • Provides staff with honest, objective and constructive feedback in a timely manner.
  • Instructs and facilitates both internal and external training.
  • Demonstrates the ability to serve as a role model and coach for staff.
  • Addresses the need to balance personal and professional goals in self and others.
  • Conducts and thoroughly documents a timely, formal review/evaluation process with staff.

Practice Management and Firm Profitability

  • Recognizes problems, assesses alternatives, and recommends solutions.
  • Monitors and efficiently controls all time spent on a project.
  • Effectively participates in the billing and collection process.
  • Recognizes value-added billing opportunities.
  • Closely manages individual productivity (realization, chargeability, etc).
  • Recognizes opportunities to provide additional services, appropriately pursue such opportunities.
  • Identifies cross-selling opportunities, and follows up leads with client personnel.
  • Recognizes opportunities to provide new innovative services, and develops such products.
  • Displays the attributes of a “Firm Ambassador” and effective client retention.

Position Requirements

  • At least seven (7) years of experience in public accounting
  • Proven growth in tax return complexity, scope, and research abilities, with emphasis in estate and trust.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience supervising and directing work of tax staff.


  • Proficient with computer and applicable spreadsheet software programs.
  • Well-rounded knowledge of accounting principles and personal income taxes.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English.


  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in accounting, tax or equivalent.
  • Minimum of forty (40) hours of CPE is required each year to develop technical business skills.
  • Participate in CPE to improve managerial, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Licenses and Certificates

  • A current and valid certified public accountant's license is required.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the American Institute of CPAs
